1926 Rolls-Royce 20 Tourer
Super project
complete with panelled frame; what you see is what you get
GSK 71
was ordered in February 1926 with a Hooper enclosed Limousine body for Mr H L
Lonsdale Esq. By this time, the beautifully built Rolls-Royce 20hp had been
updated with good four-wheel brakes and a lovely right hand gearchange with four
speeds - both present on this car.
We don't know when it lost its
original bodywork, or indeed when the chassis restoration took place, but it
appears to have been owned by AC Cobra and Ford GT40 guru John Willment, passing
through Crossthwaite and Gardner's hands, then Julian Ghosh before our vendor
acquired it in 1996.
A new body was commissioned, in the style of a
barrel-sided tourer, which is currently resting in place.
The rolling
chassis has clearly been carefully restored and painted maroon at some time in
the past and the bulkhead carries various ancilliaries. The condition of the
parts fitted would suggest that most have been overhauled.
Nice details
abound, such as Wefco spring covers although it has been sitting for some time
and we haven't been able to get the engine to turn. The body constructor had not
got round to producing the wings or screen so these remain on the 'to do'
list.
It carries its chasssis plate and a copy of its original Hooper
order, but nothing else in the way of paperwork, so its new owner will need to
involve the Rolls-Royce club in dating and confirming its origin to enable
registration.
With a huge chunk of the hard work already done, this is a
well worth-while project that looks exceptional value.
