Pre-Christmas Wine Auction rounds off a bumper year
A superb catalogue offering classic French and Italian Wines, fine Champagnes and a large section of Vintage Port was offered at Brightwell’s Wine Sale on Wednesday 4th December.
A full saleroom ensured a convivial mood; local collectors, merchants and restaurateurs were also joined by online bidders from Belgium, Denmark, Hong Kong and Italy. The pre-sale tasting was especially popular with excellent French reds and whites, Italian sparkling wine and Vintage Port all available to be sampled.
The French Wine section ran to over 400 lots and featured private collections from London, Shropshire, mid-Wales and Northumberland. The top price achieved in the section was for a 12 bottle case of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1993 which achieved £3,200. Two single bottle lots of Petrus 1960 saw the hammer fall at £2,400 each.
One of the lots that caught the public’s imagination was a 12 bottle case of Dom Perignon 1973 Vintage Champagne. Online bidders from the UK, Ireland, France and Hong Kong ensured a fierce battle; the hammer fell at £3000 - almost double the original estimate.
Vintage Port tends to be very popular at Christmas and this year was no exception. Over 70 lots of Port from private collections were offered, including some superb rarities. 14 bottles of Taylor’s 1963 sold at £1200 and a single bottle of Sandeman 1896 went under the hammer at £580.
In all over 700 lots were offered; the sale totalled over £160,000 with a clearance rate of over 84%.
